Review of Shadow of the Colossus - PS2

Hey all!

I just wanted to say, thanks for checking in on us, Chuck is working his ass off to get us back up and running and I am working on being ready to fill up LS and LSU when we are back up. I have a shit load of stuff for ya'll!

First I wanted to touch base on a game Ryno reviewed last week called "Shadow of Colossus", I decided to break out the old PS2 and give this game a go off of his recommendation, and I have to say I really am enjoying this.

If you didn't get a chance to read up on the review here are some screen shots.

The game is really great at making you feel like you are about 3 feet tall fighting a 1000ft monster. I really am loving this game. I am working my ass off to finish it before my 5 days is up with the rental.

My first take on this is to give it a 5 of 5, however I am going to wait to see if the story and gameplay get any better or worse. For now 4 out of 5.

Ryno: My review::: While I enjoyed this recording very much it wasn't at all what I expected. I was thinking the whole album would be a bit heavier. I wanted it to be a bit heavier. It wasn't. Obviously. The song writing is excellent which never lets it drag on and the acoustic version of Diary of Jane is sick. I loved it. I loved it even more because I got to hear it early. Too bad I had to delete it after listening to it. I'll be buying this one on August 8th.

fastrunner29: My Review::: My review. I loved the intro to the CD. The album artwork fit their style of music, although it would of been cooler to know what it mean (if anything.) The music reminded me of Fuel, in that it was hard rock, but not that hard. The vocalist had a great voice and accented parts of the songs with screaming, like the Used or Story of the Year does. Some of the guitar rifts made me think of Sevendust (who are awesome.) I wish the vocals where deeper and more original, some parts were predictable. Overall this CD is a great listen, but almost seems a little too mainstream for my likeing.

2006 World Series Of Poker: Why I'm pissed

The 2006 WSOP is getting ready for its premiere event, The No Limit Holdem Main Event and there could be some surprises and fireworks this year if you look at what has transpired so far: Dealers walking out, players being physically escorted from the building, Card Player magazine Goons everywhere and ESPN calling the shots.

This was supposed to be the year of the super-duper great Poker event and instead it’s been a comedy of errors. When we learned that Harrah’s was running the event and selling coverage rights to everyone it raised eyebrows. It looks like Harrah’s has decided to squeeze every penny out of both the players and the media outlets. Can you imagine paying $50,000.00 to play against the best in the world in a HORSE event and then being handed used cards to play with? It happened this year… How about being seated in a shoot out event only to be told you have to move because the table structure has been changed at the last minute? There are hundreds of stories being published in blogs and elsewhere about all of the errors and mistakes at this year's WSOP Events. Why is this happening? Wasn’t this supposed to be the year that all the problems were worked out from last year?

Let’s look at the underlying reasons for these problems. The number 1 reason is greed. Harrah’s has really gone overboard on squeezing money this year. The Dealers have been underpaid on a couple of paychecks which led to the walkout the morning of the Horse Event. Over 100 dealers walked upon receiving their paychecks which were light for the 2nd straight week. This delayed the start of a couple of events and kept cash players waiting to play in $20-40.00 games standing in line because there were not enough dealers. This was announced as a “technical” problem. Now that the dealers have to split their “tokes” from a mixed pot the good dealers have no incentive to do their best while the bad dealers could care less. They are all making the same from the Tokes. Don’t be surprised if there is another big Dealer walkout the morning the Main Event is supposed to start.

Another perplexing issue that shows pure greed is the playing cards. They are using the same decks over and over and as a card gets damaged they are mixing decks to complete full ones. Are you kidding me? The cheapest Tournament is a $1,000.00 buy in with at least a 6% vig. Don’t you think they could afford to provide new cards for the players? Folks are coming from all over the world to play. For some, this is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity and they arrive at their table only to find used cards?

The other issue that has really chapped a lot of the players and their supporters is the TV coverage schedule. ESPN announced before the tournaments began the events they planned to Film the Final tables of. Well, that schedule got thrown out the window as soon as the Tournaments started. The worst example of this is the Ladies Event. After pushing the Ladies to play until 4:00am to get a final table for the next days filming, they canceled the coverage because there were no “name” players at the table. This is disgraceful. The very first event of the Tournaments, The Tournament of champions, was modified for TV. Everyone that made it to the final table was given 10 times the chips they had. Andrew Gold had 90K in chips when they made it to the final 6 but they gave him 900K. The bad part, they didn’t raise the blinds in relation to the chip change. This made for a marathon heads up battle between Mike Sexton and Daniel Negreanu that lasted over 300 hands! Why was this done? For television coverage, of course. Of course, we’ll only get to see 1, maybe 2 hours of this great battle. Another record breaking moment may get about 2 minutes of coverage as the Event in which it happened was not on the Final table coverage list. Phil Hellmuth captured his 10th bracelet and we will only get to see snippets of the final table action. I could go on and on about ESPN's coverage. We’ll be lucky to see any of the really hot final tables this year when the shows begin on the air in October. And do expect to see them sandwiched in between football and basketball this year.

Now for my biggest gripe: the Card Player deal with the WSOP. Card Player bought exclusive rights for the final 15 table coverage. They imported about 50 interns to patrol the area and enforce this deal. Basically, if you’re wearing a press pass you’re a target. Oh boy, it’s been wild! Some of these interns have been acting like goons on a power trip the way they have handled things. Most of them don’t even know who the big name pros are! I understand trying to make your money back for your investment but the way Card Player has handled this is going to create a negative backlash that Card Player will feel for years. With this many interns you would think the coverage of the events would be excellent. You would be wrong. This year’s coverage of the WSOP has been pitiful compared to last years. It goes to show that you can’t inhibit the reporting or you get a very small, biased view of the action.

To be objective, most of the major issues from last year have been fixed. The bathroom situation has been addressed as well as the break system. I can understand why they were not ready last year for these issues because of the huge increase in players. This year these issues have hardly been raised. The event location is terrific! The Rio is a great Casino and has done a wonderful job at handling the flow of players and spectators. The folks that have hospitality suites have made this a lot of fun also. I visited many of them and had a lot of fun with the folks working at them. A shout-out goes to Doyles Room for making everyone feel so comfortable.

The Main Event starts in two days. I’m hoping that we won’t see a dealer walkout or anymore of the problems that have plagued this years events so far. This is the WSOP. It’s supposed to stand for excellence in poker. The worlds best poker players are competing for millions of dollars. Don’t you think they deserve world-class treatment from the promoters? I do.

UFC 61 Blew Goats

Wow. What a crappy card. Yves v. Stevenson was a bloody, good fight. It was really downhill from there. Frank Mir was flat and lackluster, fighting an equally uninspiring Dan Christison. I've had more exciting bowel movements. Tito Ortiz destroyed Ken Shamrock as excpected. But Herb Dean stopped the fight a bit too early, and now we are going to have to sit through another one of these rematches "just so we can be sure". I am sure Tito and Ken are both assholes, and each of them are the reason the other still has a job. Ken is at the end of the road, and Tito can't beat Chuck, so he might as well retire too. Then we had another fight, which sucked pretty bad too. It was actually bad enough, I don't want to look up their names. The loser's name was Neer (it rhymed with beer, and I really wanted a case after watching the fight). But then, huge news. If Chuck and beats Babalu (and he already has once, although when Chuck beat Babalu at UFC 40, I saw Babalu running around the MGM Grand at 4am drunk off his ass the night before the fight) then Chuck and VANDERLEI SILVA will be fighting in November. That is a huge win for the UFC and Zuffa. The Axe Murderer is THE Light Heavyweight at MMA, no questions. Then we got to sit through Arlovski try to pick apart Tim Sylvia. Tim has proven that he is pretty much unstoppable by any of the UFC's half assed heavyweights. Arlovski is by far the most talented fighter, and the biggest draw. Unfortunately, he can't beat the 6'9", 260 lbs of vanilla pudding known as Tim Sylvia. And nobody fighting on this side of the Pacific can. Tim called out Jeff Monson after the annoyingly long 25 minute fight. Jeff Monson is going to be the ball, and Tim Sylvia will be the bat. Maybe with all of this newfound fame and money, Zuffa can afford to buy a real heavyweight contender from Japan. They seem to be done with Bob Sapp. I'd pay to see that. Or maybe Crazy Horse. Although if they are buying big name fighters, lets see Fedor come over here and tear Big Tim apart. FatBoy Ranking for this UFC - 1.5 out of 5 stars, and the 1.5 came from the Yves/Joe Daddy fight, and Wanderlei Silva. And they got an extra point for WAYNE FUCKING NEWTON big pimpin some big tittied old broad in the crowd. Wayne Newton is a true pimp. Out. Technorati Tags: UFC

Did anyone watch Blade: The Series?

Did anyone watch this on Spike last night? I thought it was a bit cheesy at first, and then it started growing on you. The second there was a huge gush of blood from the throat of a russian vampire, I knew this was going to be no ordinary television series. It was gritty, dark, and sexy. I really enjoyed it, and feel bad about it because I have been making fun of it for months during the UFC broadcasts. My only complaints were the second rate CGI (but what do you want for a show produced by Spike TV) and the damn wire effect fighing. I hate wire effects. The reason for the drop? The Xbox 360 hardware team is working on redesigning the ATI and IBM chips to cut costs. With as much Brit Booty I post on this site, I figured I should just make a clarification. I am not a Brit. I am originally from New York, and have lived in Dallas, Texas for almost 6 years now. Fat Boy Gamer: PS2 MicroCon Wireless Review

This review, like many of Fat Boy Magazine's has been a long time in the making, although I believe in this case, it is fully warranted. I do not believe that one can do an effective review of a product without really becoming intimate with it. I have had the MadCatz PS2 MicroCon Wireless Controller for 3 months now. I have beat the hell out of it. It "takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'". It has been dropped (both on the floor, and into a large cup of Dr. Pepper) and has never ceased to operate (though of course I waited a day for the Dr. Pepper to dry out). Of course I would definitely not recommend throwing or submerging these controllers, it is definitely good to know that the folks at MadCatz have a durable product. I have logged at least 200 hours of gameplay on the MadCatz PS2 MicroCon Wireless Controller. It has never ceased to function as soundly as a corded controller. Being able to sit on the couch and play Madden 2K6 for hours and not have wires to trip over on bathroom and food breaks is a fantastic thing. Strangely enough, I have not yet had to replace the batteries in this controller either. Maybe I got a lucky battery or something. I had a wireless mouse and keyboard on one of my PC's and I changed the batteries every 4 or 5 days it would seem. This definitely has not been a problem with the MadCatz PS2 MicroCon Wireless Controller. I have to say that I strongly recommend this controller to anyone who has ever had an issue with their dog, mother, or random siblings tripping over their cords. It is a convenience that is worth the extra money ($29.95 suggested retail, but shop around!), and the performance does not suffer in the slightest. Technorati Tags: MadCatz, PS2

Fat Boy Music Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium

First, I am a lame ass. I have had this CD set for two weeks now, and I still haven't finished this review. I have given the set a healthy listening too, and am finally getting to the review, late of course. The Fat Boy has been way too busy the past few weeks, and the publishing, though plentiful, has been in spurts. But, on to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Now, last week you heard me complain about a lack of radio friendly music on the Tool release, 10,000 Days. Today you are going to hear me complain a little bit about the overcommercialization of the Red Hot Chili Pepper's music. Ever since the Red Hot Chili Peppers went "Under The Bridge", they have gone from some of the funkiest white boys on the planet to a pop power ballad group, like a funky version of Creed. Ouch. I take that back. These guys are still damn good. And nobody on the planet sucks like Scott Stapp. Just ask Bob Ritchie. OK. That's the end of my Red Hot Chili Peppers bashing. I don't hate that the guys want to make money. I do really miss the Flea Funk-Heavy basslines of the old Peppers. Actually I really like the bassline to "Charlie" (Track 1-03). The song sucks though. All in all, as far as the Californication era Red Hot Chili Peppers go, this album could be the best. I think the song "Wet Sand" (Track 1-13) is the best Peppers track in years. It has a good sound, and it uses a weird feedback later in the song that sounds like percussion... and it was weird enough sounding that I thought I had a flat tire in my car. Every once in a while, we hear something that reminds us of the old Peppers. Storm in a Teacup (Track 2-11) has a "Give It Away meets the Beastie Boys" feel, which is a good thing indeed. It reminds me a lot of the old Blood Sugar Sex Magik music that really inspired me as a teenager. It made me the fat funky white boy I am today. Dani California (Track 1-01) is a very radio friendly track and will likely get a lot of play. It sounds like a lot of other Chili Peppers songs. Not that this is a bad thing. Snow (1-02) is another track like this. I really think that this double album is the best thing that the RHCP have produced in 15 years. Rory Singer Wins His Preliminary Match in TUF3

This was a pretty decent episode of The Ultimate Fighter. Solomon talked a whole lot of crap, and Rory tried to talk it back, but it didn't really work. Rory looked really uncomfortable on his feet against Solomon, but Solomon's wind was terrible. Between rounds, Tito Ortiz told Rory that Solomon was ripe for a head kick. This was definitely true, since Solomon could barely keep his hands up. Rory went for the kick, and it was very sloppy, but it landed (the strike came from the inside of the leg just below the knee, but it was effective) and Solomon fell and was pounded out. The Elder Scrolls IV, Oblivion gets changed to an MA Rating by the ESRB.

In a move that could be described only as stupid, the pointless organization known as the ESRB has changed the rating of Oblivion from T (Teen) to M (Mature) for a user developed modification that allows players to develop topless female characters [Video Link]. How stupid is that? I have seen some pretty pornographic user mods for games like The Sims 2, but you don't see the ESRB going after that game for some odd reason. Personally, I couldn't care what the ESRB thinks. The ESRB rating is even more useless than an MPAA rating. Kids are going to get and play whatever they want. Similarly, I can't go to a rated R movie on a weekend night without fighting the urge to chokeslam some loudmouthed 14 year old. This is just stupid. The ESRB is a useless organization, the MPAA is a useless organization, and politicians need to stay out of video games. Fat Boy Music - Review - Tool - 10,000 Days

It seems to me that all recent Tool albums have one or two radio friendly songs, and then is basically a bunch of muddled white noise and bullshit. I’m sure its great stuff if all you do is sit around the house and smoke pot all day. I really feel like, with the exception of the tracks 1, 2 and 5, this is just another “phoned in” attempt at an album by tool. Tool fans will flame away, I am certain. I am sure that they love Maynard and they love the soundtrack to their little cyberpunk pothead world. Radio friendly Tool kicks ass. The entire “Undertow” album kicks ass. Unfortunately, by the look of this album, Tool is suffering from Dave Matthews Syndrome (DMS). For those of you unfamiliar, DMS is a syndrome when a band becomes so popular, they finally reach a point of realization that they can spew forth whatever crap they want to onto a CD and their lemming fans will buy it. My theory actually states that Dave Matthews could release a double live album of himself taking a really long and painful crap and sell a million copies. Here is my track by track analysis of “10,000 Days” 1. Vicarious: Awesome classic Tool sound. This sounds as good as anything that Tool has ever done. No surprise that it is the first single for the album. 2. Jambi: Begins with a cool old-school speed metal feel, but it tricks you because it never really cuts loose, but this is still a pretty damn good track. Two good songs in the beginning, the rest of the album is pretty depressing with the exception of #5, below. 3. Wings for Marie (Part 1) Muddled nonsense 4. 10,000 Day: Muddled nonsense part 2… 17 minutes to drone this crap… could have taken 1 minute and put it on a repeat for 17 and got the same result. 5. The Pot: Interesting falsetto singing in the beginning, and then right into some radio friendly tool… this one kicks ass. 6. Lipan Conjuring: Strange minute plus track of what sounds like American Indian chanting. 7. Lost Keys: More white noise crap. Maybe they lost the keys to the studio. Or the producer who knew what he was doing lost the keys to his car and couldn’t make it this day. 8. Rosetta Stoned: Crap. But the title shows the mentality of the average Tool fan. 9. Intension: Crap, crap, crappity crap crap. 10. Right In Two: A bit whiney and boring for nearly 6 minutes, then it turns itself into a pretty cool song. If you can suffer through the six minutes, do it. 11. Vigniti Tres: No vocals… could be a cool backtrack for another Predator vs. Alien sequel though. Technorati Tags: Tool, 10,000 days

Fat Boy Horsepower: Dodge Challenger and our 300th Post!

At Fat Boy Magazine, we really have an appreciation for soft curves. Sometimes, however, some gasoline, 4160 lbs of steel and carbon fiber, and a 510HP 6.4L Hemi is what it takes to get us excited. Dodge showed off the old school inspired Challenger originally at the Detroit Auto Show, completely stealing the thunder from the cartoony revision of the Chevy Camaro. Rumour has it that Dodge will begin production next March. I will definitely want to own one of these, especially if they do decide to make them with the 392 Hemi. Check out the pretty pictures.

Rumor has it that Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls IV is being ported to the PSP and PS3. This is a big hit for Bethesda, and a big sucking chest wound to Microsoft. The last 2 Elder Scrolls games and of course HALO were a very big selling point for the technologically superior yet poorly marketed XBox. It would almost seem that the guys in charge of marketing the XBox are stealing from Sega's playbook. Make a superior product, then don't tell anybody about it. Apparantly, Sony has learned from their mistake with BetaMax and they have never looked back. Having a superior product and having your marketing department lay an egg must suck. The next contest is going to be a good one. No complex James Bond crap like the last one we ran. This one is simple, and the prize kicks total ass. Winner of this contest will receive the MadCatz PC CON Wireless Controller. A wireless 2.4GHz controller for your computer! I have one of these right now, and it kicks so much ass not having to deal with cords anymore. I also have one of these for my game consoles, and they also kick major ass. Sitting on the couch playing games without cords is truly one of life's great pleasures, in my book. These controllers also have gel grips, so they don't wear on your hands after a marathon session of Madden 2k6. We don't have a DVD to review for you guys today, but instead, I offer a movie tip. I went and saw Lucky Number Slevin this weekend. It was pretty damn fantastic. I can't really tell you too much without ruining the plot, but it involves a hitman, two mob bosses, a down on his luck guy, and his hot mortician girl across the hall. Good story, great acting, great chemistry between Liu and Hartnett. Its a really good movie, and you will thoroughly enjoy it, especially if you like Lucy Liu, movies with criminal undertones, or anything from Tarantino. I know that this is going to be a great fight, and I can tell you that everyone in the Fat Boy household will be rooting for Forrest (my fiancee because she thinks he is cute, and me because I think he is funny). Fat Boy 30 Second Interview: Rory Singer of The Ultimate Fighter 3

If you haven't seen The Ultimate Fighter 3, which just premiered Thursday on SpikeTV, you are missing out on something exciting. This time, the two coaches are Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock, and these two absolutely hate each other, so the potential for fireworks is always high, and you can feel the tension even in the first episode. Rory Singer is a good friend and training partner of Forrest Griffin, and I have been lucky to make his acquaintance on a few occasions. He is one of the fighters in this season's show. I caught Rory online and this is what we came up with. Rory Singer: What's up? The Fat Boy: Nada... just saying hi... you looked good on TV the other day... Rory Singer: Thanks The Fat Boy: And not in a gay way The Fat Boy: Will you give me a prediction for Forrest vs. Tito? I only hope that Forrest wins.
